Course objectives:
To be acquainted with the typology of information resources with concentration on electronic information resources. To plot free accessible resources on the Internet, eventually intranet for given area - their searching possibilities and credibility. To become in detail familiar with anticipated licensed resources for medicine and health care. To understand the specifics of scientific publication and criteria for evaluation of scientific contents of documents. To understand basic bibliometric methods for quality evaluation of publications. To accept the importance of high-quality information for evidence based medicine including importance of systematic overviews. To master using tools for question formulation and search strategy practically. To learn how to critically evaluate found results of information/document searching. To learn how to use found results in practice.

The course is a part of courses in teaching of professional skills. It will teach the students fundamentals of critical thinking: to understand the need and importance of scientific approach in clinical practice (evidence based medicine). It will teach the students basics of searching strategy with regard to acquiring skilled information, its selection, critical evaluation and processing.

Requirements on student
Requirements on the student:
- Attendance at classes (1 absence is excused in case of illness),
- Attendance at seminars,
- To work out partial background research
- To confirm acquired skills in a model background research.

Requirements for the credit:
- Formal requirements,
- Background research as an ordered set of entries:
a) Title-page with named topic of the background research, specifications about the student, university, department, study program, date.
b) Contents with listed researched resources, structured results in separate parts (thematic or according to the types of documents), brief annotation, key words in Czech and English, used question formulations in Czech and English.
c) Single searching results - bibliographic cards, elaborated according to relevant norms for bibliographic quotations, sorted within chosen categories alphabetically according to the surname of the first author or according to the title of the document and continuously numbered.

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course:
The student knows:
-Types of documents which are appropriate for use in research and professional practice,
-Where electronic professional information and documents can be found (free accessible, accessible within deep web, in particular licensed databases),
-Steps of searching strategy for effective searching,
-How to critically evaluate found information.

The student is able:
-To formulate key words on ordered topic of the seminar/qualification paper,
-To formulate a question by searching tools,
-To critically evaluate, classify and order selected references on professional literature,
-To acquire full texts to references (database, through libraries, on the Web),
-To check scientific quality of acquired information,
-To process selected information.
