Course objectives:
|
The lecture offers an outline of genres of Latin medieval literature from late Classical antiquity until the so-called Ottonian renaissance. Tutorials will be dedicated to reading extracts of chosen works documenting the specifics of individual genres.

Requirements on student
|
Student is supposed to prepare intensively at home, to participate regularly and in an active manner on the seminars and also to write a paper in the length of four pages (elaborating a biogram of a chosen author and a commented translation of an extract from his work).

Content
|
1. Basic features of the literature of late classical antiquity. 2.-3. Patristics. 4.-5. Literature of the 6th to 8th century: Italy, Afria, Hispany, Galia, British Islands and Irland. 6. Carolinian renaissance. 7. Periodization of the following development of the medieval literature and it's basic characteristics. 8. Form of the medieval prose. 9. Historiography. 10. Biography, autobiography, travel literature. 11. Mystic prose. 12. Hagiography.

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Student orientates in the Latin literary production from the late Classical antiquity until the so-called Ottonian renaissance, knows the characteristic attributes of individual literary genres, and is able to read, translate and interpret extracts of chosen works of a particular period. |
