Course objectives:
The goal of the course is to deal with a selected topic in Medieval Latin literature in English. In this semester, we will focus on sermons and preaching in the Middle Ages. The attention will be paid especially to different approaches to the study of medieval sermons, to the definition of the genre, to its development in the Middle Ages, to preaching activities in various milieus (the monastic preaching, the preaching to the laity, the university preaching) and to preaching aids.

Requirements on student
For the successful completion of the course it is required, that students regularly attend the course (min. 75%), join in discussion, present a paper (max. 20 p.) and pass the oral exam (max 80 p.).

5. Sermons in the High Middle Ages: Sermons of the schoolmasters.
6. Preaching and heresy.
7. The thematic sermon.
8. Forms of transmission of medieval sermons.
9.-10. The preaching of the friars.
11.-12. Preaching aids.
13. The earliest sermon collections in the Bohemian lands.

Competences - students are expected to possess the following competences before the course commences to finish it successfully:
Knowledge of English language (at least level B1) and Latin (at least at basic level - four semester course) is assumed.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course:
After the successfull completion of the course, students will be able to define typical features of medieval sermons, to describe the development of the genre and
to explain problems of interpreting sermons in English.
Skills - skills resulting from the course:
After the successfull completion of the course, students will be able to understand and apply the terminology and methods related to the chosen topic. They will improve their language skills, they will be able to present a paper, join in discussion on selected topic and express their opinions in English.
