Course objectives:
|
The course follows up the contents of correlative courses 1OAJ1 and 1OAJ2. The focus is on the terminology of topics listed below which are also topics for basic genre analysis. On the background of these topics, students are continuously familiarized with grammar related to the discussed communication skills in both written and spoken discourse. The grammar in this semester concentrates on the use of future continuous and future perfect simple, modality and modals in the passive voice, conditional clauses . Emphasis is put on authentic texts and recordings. Students acquire the knowledge of basic principles of corporate culture and identity, professional and career development, finance and business cycle. Students discuss digital business and use of various digital platforms and language strategies to communicate with customers. The ability to present and defend one's methods and opinions using professional terminology is also complemented in this semester by an emphasis on self-presentation and impression management.

Requirements on student
|
The course is taught in English. Crediting requirements: min 80% attendance in seminars, active participation, coursework throughout the semester (i.e. Students are required to complete individual tasks assigned during the semester), and at least 60% score at the final test.
Final assessment:
Written exam: 60%
Tasks assigned during the term (submitted in Moodle within the deadline): 20%

1. - 3. Corporate culture (projecting corporate culture and values into policies and other documents, workplace culture, identities and values, employee retention, socialization and building relationships, presenting oneself; grammar: future continuous and future perfect simple, phrases with 'be')
4. - 6. Training and development (learning on the job and different types of training, career development, human resource strategies, team communication, facilitating a meeting, request emails and enquiries; grammar: modals in the passive voice, linking words for reason and purpose)
7. - 9. Finance (the business cycle, recessions and depressions, managing bad news, clarifying and analysing information in financial documents / graphs, writing annual report summary; grammar: expressing certainty and probability, position of adverbs and adverbial phrases)
10. - 12. Digital business (digital disruptors, technology related collocations, handling difficult communicators, negotiation strategies, useful phrases for reaching an agreement, writing a business proposal; grammar: zero, first and second conditionals, linkers)

Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students prove the knowledge of professional terminology in business English, functional language and communication strategies related to corporate culture and corporate values, professional development, finance and business cycle. Students are also capable of identifying and interpreting communication strategies in digital business and customer communication. |
Skills - skills resulting from the course: |
Students become well-versed in selected topics of business discourse. They are capable of discussing the issues of human resource management, individual stages of business cycle and apply their knowledge of functional phrases and communication strategies in socializing and relationship building among employees and with customers, handling difficult communicators and clarifying and analysing information in financial documents or graphs. Students are competent to write request emails, enquiries and replies, and annual report summaries. Students analyse different types of professional texts. |
